Sydney throws the New Year’s Eve the rest of the world watches: two enormous firework displays — the 9pm family show and the midnight spectacular — launched from the Harbour Bridge, city barges and rooftops, reflected across the water to a million people ringing the foreshore. The next display is 31 December 2026.
Where to watch
Free vantage points around the harbour (Mrs Macquarie’s Point, Blues Point, Bradfield Park, Barangaroo and dozens more) open early and fill fast — many by mid-morning, and the best lock in by early afternoon. Ticketed vantage points and harbour cruises offer guaranteed views for a price. Plan transport ahead: roads close and trains run all night.
Best free spots
For the classic Bridge-and-Opera-House frame, Mrs Macquarie’s Point is unbeatable but brutally contested; Kirribilli and Milsons Point on the north shore are the locals’ pick. Whichever you choose, arrive with food, water and patience. More photography spots around the harbour.
