By Pavan Sydney’s best-kept logistical secret is how quickly it ends. Ninety minutes in almost any direction lands you somewhere that feels like a different state — a kilometre-deep wilderness valley, a rainforest gorge, a waterfall dropping into a swimming lagoon. These are the twelve day trips we rate, organised by drive time, every one road-tested and linked to its full guide.
Under 90 minutes
Royal National Park & Wattamolla (1 hour south). A waterfall spilling into a sheltered swimming lagoon behind a beach — arrive before 10am on summer weekends, the gate closes when the car park fills. Pair it with the Coast Track’s sea cliffs.
Somersby Falls & the Central Coast (1 hour north). Tiered rainforest cascades with a barbecue picnic area — the classic old-fashioned family day out, ten minutes off the M1.
The Blue Mountains (90 minutes west). The heavyweight. Skip the Echo Point crush and base your day at Blackheath: Govetts Leap, the Grand Canyon loop and village pies. Our full Blue Mountains guide maps the day out; the train from Central makes it car-free.
Bowral & the Southern Highlands (90 minutes south-west). Gardens, boutiques, Bradman’s oval and Georgian Berrima — then Fitzroy Falls on the way home, five minutes’ walk from its car park.
Around 2 hours
Kangaroo Valley. Historic suspension bridge, green valley walls, canoes on the river. A long day but a complete one — the waterfall circuit above the valley (Fitzroy and Belmore Falls) folds in naturally.
Minnamurra Rainforest & Kiama. A boardwalk through remnant subtropical rainforest to a two-stage waterfall, then fish and chips at Kiama’s blowhole. One of the best wet-weather day trips on this list — the rainforest is arguably better in drizzle.
Berry & Seven Mile Beach. The South Coast’s favourite main street plus an enormous, usually empty beach ten minutes away. Queue for the donut van; you were always going to.
Hunter Valley. Doable in a day with a designated driver — pick one pocket of Pokolbin, three cellar doors and a long lunch, rather than criss-crossing the valley.
Stretch it to 2.5 hours
Jervis Bay. The whitest sand on the east coast. As a day trip it is a commitment — leave by 7am, swim by 10 — but on a clear summer weekday it beats any beach in Sydney by the length of the straight.
Port Stephens. Dolphins on a morning cruise, the Tomaree summit panorama, sandboarding the Stockton dunes after lunch — a greatest-hits day two and a half hours north.
