Somersby Falls is the Central Coast’s classic short-and-sweet waterfall: Floods Creek stepping down terrace after terrace of rock through cool rainforest, an hour’s drive from Sydney and barely a kilometre of walking end to end.
Two tiers, one creek
From the picnic area the track reaches the upper falls in minutes — a wide shelf cascade that spreads lace-like after rain. Continue down the rougher lower section and the lower falls appear, taller and framed tighter by coachwood and ferns; most visitors stop at the first tier, so the second is often yours alone.
An old-fashioned picnic spot
Somersby has been a family day-trip institution for generations, and the picnic area keeps the tradition alive with barbecues, tables and shade. It’s the kind of place Central Coast locals take visiting relatives — ten minutes of rainforest, sausages afterwards.
Know before you go
A vehicle day-use fee applies (Brisbane Water National Park). The rocks beside the falls are genuinely slippery — more injuries happen here from scrambling than the modest walk suggests, so keep to the track and out of the water per NPWS signage.
