Barrenjoey Headland, at the very tip of Palm Beach, is Sydney’s northernmost whale-watching option — a genuine bushwalk up to the 1881 lighthouse rewards you with 360-degree views over both the ocean and Pittwater, making it easy to spot whales on either side.
What to Expect
- A 30–40 minute uphill walk from Governor Phillip Park to the lighthouse
- Free parking at Governor Phillip Park (fills early on weekends)
- No facilities at the top — bring water for the climb
- Cafes and toilets at Palm Beach itself, at the base of the track
Because it takes more effort than the eastern suburbs spots, Barrenjoey tends to be quieter even on a good whale-watching weekend.
