The Hunter Valley has been doing this longer than anywhere in Australia — vines went in during the 1820s, and the region has spent two centuries perfecting the art of the indulgent weekend. Base yourself among the vineyards of Pokolbin and the formula writes itself: cellar doors by day, serious restaurants by night, mist over the Brokenback Range at dawn.
The wine
The Hunter’s calling card is Semillon — picked early, bottled light, and transformed by a decade in the cellar into one of the world’s great white wines. Old-vine Shiraz, medium-bodied and earthy, is the other pillar. More than 150 cellar doors range from famous family names to one-shed operations where the winemaker pours your tasting.
Beyond the glass
The valley has quietly become a full-service escape: hatted restaurants and long-lunch institutions, the sprawling Hunter Valley Gardens, golf, day spas, summer lawn concerts that pull international headliners, and hot-air balloons drifting over the vines at sunrise. Designated drivers are well catered for — most doors offer juice or coffee, and tour shuttles do the driving for everyone else.

Two hours from Sydney via the Hunter Expressway. Weekends book out — reserve tastings, dinner and beds together. February–March vintage is the valley at its most alive; winter is reds-by-the-fire season and the views are sharpest. Details correct at the time of writing (July 2026).
