Bowral is Sydney’s escape of long standing — the hill station where generations have gone for cool air, gardens and a main street of boutiques that outclasses most city strips. Ninety minutes down the Hume (or a direct train), it anchors the Southern Highlands’ constellation of villages, and it wears every season beautifully.
The town
Bong Bong Street is the Highlands’ catwalk: boutiques, bookshops, provedores and cafes in Federation brick. Cricket pilgrims head for the Bradman Museum beside the oval where the game’s greatest batsman learned his craft; garden pilgrims come in late September for Tulip Time, when Corbett Gardens erupts in tens of thousands of blooms. Climb Mount Gibraltar for the whole town under its trees.
The villages
The real Highlands trick is the 25-minute radius: Berrima, a whole Georgian village in golden sandstone, antique shops included; Moss Vale and its stylish homeware strip; dairy-green Robertson up on the rainforest edge; and Bundanoon at the gates of Morton National Park. String them together and you’ve built the perfect aimless Saturday.
The edges
The Highlands end suddenly and spectacularly: Fitzroy Falls pours off the escarpment 20 minutes from Bowral, Belmore and Carrington Falls hide nearby, and Kangaroo Valley waits at the bottom of the hill. Cool-climate cellar doors fill the paddocks between.
