FreeFamily

For three weeks each winter, Sydney switches on Vivid — the southern hemisphere’s largest festival of light, music and ideas. The Opera House sails become a canvas, the Royal Botanic Garden fills with glowing installations, and light walks thread from Circular Quay to Darling Harbour and beyond. Vivid Sydney 2027 runs 28 May to 19 June 2027.

What to see

The free Light Walk is the heart of it — kilometres of illuminated sculptures, projections and interactive works you wander after dark. Alongside runs a ticketed program of music (Vivid Music) and talks (Vivid Ideas). Weeknights are far calmer than weekends; arrive at dusk as the lights switch on around 6pm.

Planning it

It’s all central and best by public transport — ferries give you the Opera House and Bridge light shows from the water. Cold-weather layers are essential. The classic vantage points double as prime photography spotsMrs Macquarie’s Chair and Milsons Point among them.
