Two minutes from downtown Kununurra, Mirima National Park — known locally as Hidden Valley — packs 350-million-year-old sandstone domes into a pocket-sized park that locals call the "mini Bungle Bungles." If you can’t make the flight or the corrugated drive to Purnululu, this is the East Kimberley’s banded rock at walking distance.
Why it’s special
The valley’s orange-and-grey striped formations are the same geology as the famous beehive domes, but here the lookout is a 20-minute climb rather than a day trip. At sunset the rock ignites, and at dawn you’ll often have the trails to yourself apart from the corellas.
Walks in the park
- Looking at Plants Trail (500m, easy) — signage on Miriwoong plant use and seasons.
- Derdbe-gerring Banan lookout (800m return, steep) — the classic panorama over Kununurra and the valley.
Getting there and when to go
Mirima is at the end of Hidden Valley Road, five minutes’ drive from Kununurra’s shops. Visit in the dry season (May–September); in the build-up months the rock radiates serious heat, so go at dawn. Park entry fees apply — a WA Parks pass covers it.

- Carry water even for short walks; shade is scarce.
- Respect Miriwoong country — stay on marked trails.
