At the foot of Bartle Frere — Queensland’s highest mountain — rainforest water has polished a granite chute into the closest thing nature makes to a waterslide. Josephine Falls is an hour south of Cairns and worth every minute: jungle-framed cascades, a jade swimming hole, and boulders warm enough to dry off on.
Swimming at Josephine Falls
Swimming is permitted in the lower pool only, where the famous rock slide delivers you into deep, clear water. The upper falls are permanently closed to swimmers — flash flooding here is sudden and has been fatal. If the water is rising, murky, or the access track is closed, the river is telling you something; listen to it.
Getting there
From the Bruce Highway at Mirriwinni (75km south of Cairns), follow the signposted road to the car park. A wheelchair-accessible 600m rainforest track leads to viewing platforms and the swimming area.
When to go
Year-round, with caveats: in the wet season (December–April) flows can close the pool at short notice; in the dry the slide is gentler and the pool clearest. Weekday mornings are quietest.
Need to know
- No lifeguards; supervise children closely around the slide.
- Leeches exist, marine stingers don’t — this is croc-free, stinger-free freshwater swimming.
