Five hundred million years of wind, salt and rain sculpted the granite of Kangaroo Island’s south-west corner into shapes no artist would dare submit. Remarkable Rocks live up to the name at any hour — but at dawn, when the orange lichen glows and the tour coaches are still hours away, they’re one of Australia’s great sunrise experiences.
Why dawn
The boulders sit on a granite dome above the Southern Ocean facing east of south — first light rakes across them, exaggerating every curve and hollow. You’ll typically share sunrise with a handful of photographers; by 10am, hundreds of visitors. The sunrise-spot rule applies doubly here.
Getting there
Remarkable Rocks are in Flinders Chase National Park, about 90 minutes’ drive from the Kingscote ferry terminal area via the Playford and West End highways. Park entry requires a Kangaroo Island Tour Pass or day pass. A boardwalk leads from the car park onto the dome.
Need to know
- The lower granite slopes are deceptively steep and end in the ocean — stay well back from the dark, wave-splashed rock.
- Wind here is near-constant; bring a layer even in summer.
