The setting
Federal sits on a ridge of old volcano country between Byron Bay and Lismore — macadamia farms, rainforest gullies and views that roll all the way to the coast escarpment. It is the hinterland the day-trippers photograph on the way to Minyon Falls, fifteen minutes further on.
Around the farm
Byron Bay’s beaches and the Cape Byron lighthouse walk are about 25 minutes east; Bangalow’s heritage main street 15 minutes; and Nightcap National Park’s rainforest — Minyon and Protesters Falls — fills a full day inland. The Sunday drive circuit through Federal, Clunes and Eureka is the hinterland at its most postcard.
