Minyon Falls is the Byron hinterland at its most dramatic: Repentance Creek sliding off a 100-metre wall of rhyolite — the hardened remains of the ancient Tweed shield volcano — into a palm-filled amphitheatre of Gondwana rainforest. It’s the centrepiece of Nightcap National Park and one of the tallest waterfalls in northern NSW.
The easy version
From the picnic area, a short walk leads to a fenced lookout perched almost beside the lip of the falls. You get the full drop, the rainforest bowl below and, on clear days, views running all the way to the coast. With barbecues and picnic tables at the car park, this is the version most families do.
The adventurous version
The Minyon Loop descends from the escarpment through blackbutt forest into subtropical rainforest and bangalow palms, reaching the boulder-strewn base of the falls before climbing back out. It’s steep, slippery after rain and takes the better part of half a day — but standing under that cliff line looking up 100 metres is a very different experience from the lookout.
Know before you go
Entry is free. Swimming isn’t permitted above the falls, and the creek near the lip is genuinely dangerous. The drive in from Byron Bay or Mullumbimby takes about 45 minutes on sealed roads. Nearby Protesters Falls makes an easy add-on for a full Nightcap day. Details correct at the time of writing (July 2026).
