Turon Gates has been a Sydney escape-hatch for decades: 6,000 acres of box-gum bush along the Turon River, scattered with glamping tents and log cabins and very little else. Its 4.6 Google rating across 291 reviews says the formula still works.

The setting
The safari tents put a four-poster bed and an ensuite behind canvas, a river at the bottom of the paddock and kangaroos on the flats at dusk; the log cabins add wood fires and verandahs. Dogs are genuinely welcome, and the swimming holes are the summer headline.
Around the Turon
This is old gold country — Sofala’s leaning weatherboard streetscape is half an hour away, and the Bylong Valley Way and Mudgee’s cellar doors make an easy day loop north.
