The Bylong Valley Way is the scenic shortcut nobody takes: 120-odd kilometres linking the Hunter Valley to Mudgee wine country through sandstone gorge, horse-stud pasture and the silent, beautiful Bylong Valley — with Goulburn River National Park’s cliffs for company.
The route
Leaving the Golden Highway near Sandy Hollow, the road follows the Goulburn River gorge before opening into Bylong’s valley (blink-and-miss general store, worth the stop), then climbs through Wollar towards Mudgee’s cellar doors — or hooks south to Rylstone and the Capertee Valley.
Need to know
- Fully sealed and quiet — a genuine alternative to the Golden Highway between Hunter and Mudgee.
- Rylstone detour: sandstone village pubs and Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp’s rock country.
- Fuel at Sandy Hollow, Rylstone or Mudgee.
