Everyone who visits Bellingen plots, at least briefly, to move there. “Bello” is a timber-boom town on the green flats of the Bellinger River that reinvented itself as the North Coast’s creative capital — a main street of Federation verandahs housing bookshops, cafes, makers and one very good pub, with rainforest escarpment rising green behind everything.
Rivers first
Summer in Bellingen is organised around water. The town has its own river holes, but the pilgrimage is to the Never Never River at Promised Land, ten minutes north — clear, cold water over smooth stones in a valley whose name is not overselling it. At dusk, thousands of flying foxes lift off Bellingen Island in one of the east coast’s great free spectacles.
The town
Hyde Street rewards slow mornings: long breakfasts, second-hand books, gallery browsing, and the heritage Memorial Hall that anchors the streetscape. On the third Saturday of each month the community markets take over the park — music, produce and the full Bello ecosystem in one paddock.
Up Waterfall Way
Bellingen is the base camp for Waterfall Way: thirty minutes of hairpins up the escarpment lands you in Dorrigo National Park’s World Heritage rainforest — Skywalk, Crystal Shower Falls, Dangar Falls — before the road runs on to Ebor and Wollomombi. It’s one of the great Australian drives, and it starts at the end of the main street.
