Fitzroy Falls gets the visitor centre and the coaches; Belmore Falls, fifteen minutes away, gets the people who know the Southern Highlands. Here Barrengarry Creek steps off the escarpment in a two-tier plunge of more than 100 metres into the green throat of Kangaroo Valley — and on a weekday you can still have the lookout to yourself.
Why it’s special
The setting does the work: Hindmarsh Lookout hangs on the escarpment rim with the falls to one side and the full sweep of Kangaroo Valley below. After decent rain the twin drops thunder; in drier spells they thin to elegant ribbons that photographers often prefer. Morning light favours the valley view, and low cloud in the gorge can turn the whole scene into something out of a landscape painting.
Getting there
Belmore Falls is reached off Belmore Falls Road between Robertson and Wildes Meadow, about 15 minutes’ drive from Robertson village and two hours from Sydney. The final stretch is well-maintained gravel, fine for 2WD driven gently. From the car park it’s a short, mostly flat walk to Hindmarsh Lookout and the falls viewpoints.
Need to know
- Stay behind the fences — the cliff edges here are undercut and genuinely dangerous, and there is no legal track to the base.
- No facilities beyond the car park and picnic spots; the nearest cafes (and the famous pie shop) are in Robertson.
- The falls flow best within a few days of rain — pair a wet week with a weekend visit.
