Cape Solander, inside Kamay Botany Bay National Park at Kurnell, is Sydney’s best-known dedicated whale-watching spot — the NSW Government even installed purpose-built viewing platforms here because so many humpbacks pass close to the headland on their annual migration.
What to Expect
- Raised viewing platforms with interpretive signage right at the cliff edge
- Whales often visible with the naked eye; bring binoculars for a better look
- Free car park at the reserve, a short walk to the platforms
- Toilets on site; no cafe, so bring water and snacks
Best viewing is late May to July as whales head north, and again September to November on the return trip south with calves in tow — that second window tends to bring whales closer to shore.
