Dangar Falls (Dorrigo)

A horseshoe curtain of water on the Bielsdown River, two minutes from Dorrigo — the easiest and most photogenic quick stop on Waterfall Way.

FreeFamily

Dangar Falls is proof that a waterfall doesn’t need to be huge to be unforgettable. On the northern edge of Dorrigo, the Bielsdown River fans out over a horseshoe-shaped basalt shelf and drops in a neat white curtain into a green pool — with a lookout you can reach about two minutes after leaving the town’s main street.

The easiest stop on Waterfall Way

Waterfall Way between Bellingen and Armidale is stacked with big-name falls, but most involve gorges, steps or distance. Dangar is the freebie: park, walk a few metres, and the whole amphitheatre is in front of you. After decent rain the curtain spans the full width of the shelf and the sound fills the little valley.

Down at the pool

A short path winds from the lookout to the base, where the plunge pool has long been Dorrigo’s unofficial swimming hole in warm weather. There’s no patrol and flows change quickly after rain, so treat it with respect — but on a hot February afternoon it’s hard to beat.

Know before you go

Entry is free and the falls sit just off the highway, making them the natural first or last stop of a Dorrigo day that might also take in the Skywalk and Crystal Shower Falls in Dorrigo National Park. Don’t confuse this Dangar Falls with Dangars Falls near Armidale — different river, different gorge. Details correct at the time of writing (July 2026).
