Ebor Falls is the best five-minute detour on Waterfall Way. On the edge of the tiny tablelands village of Ebor, the Guy Fawkes River steps off two shelves of columned basalt — leftovers of the ancient Ebor volcano — and the first lookout is barely a stroll from your car door.
Volcano country
What sets Ebor apart is the rock. The falls pour over neat hexagonal basalt columns, like organ pipes stacked across the riverbed, marking the flows of a volcano that erupted here tens of millions of years ago. The upper fall splits into twin cascades around a basalt island; the lower fall drops deeper into the forested Guy Fawkes valley.
The lookout track
An easy track links the upper lookout with a second platform overlooking the lower falls — 20 to 30 minutes return through snow gums, with the valley opening up below. In autumn and winter, mist regularly hangs in the gorge at sunrise, and the tablelands cold means the air stays glass-clear.
Know before you go
Entry is free, with a picnic area and toilets at the car park. Ebor sits halfway between Dorrigo and Armidale, so the falls slot perfectly into a Waterfall Way run alongside Dangar, Wollomombi and Apsley Falls. Fuel and food are available in the village.
