North Head, the dramatic headland guarding the entrance to Sydney Harbour, gives some of the highest and widest ocean views in Sydney — which makes it a genuinely good whale-watching spot as well as a lookout, especially from Fairfax Lookout and the old Third Quarantine Ground cliffs.
What to Expect
- Sweeping, elevated views straight out to open ocean
- Several free lookout points (Fairfax Lookout, North Fort) within the North Head Sanctuary
- Free parking near the lookouts
- Cafe at Q Station nearby if you want a coffee after
Because the headland sits so high above the water, this is also a good option on breezier days when lower-lying spots feel more exposed.
Location
North Head Scenic Drive, Manly NSW 2095, within Sydney Harbour National Park.
