The Sea Cliff Bridge doesn’t cross water so much as float beside a cliff: 665 metres of elevated roadway swinging out over the Tasman between Coalcliff and Clifton, with the rainforest-clad Illawarra escarpment looming behind. Since opening in 2005 it has become the signature image of the Grand Pacific Drive and one of the most photographed pieces of infrastructure in Australia.
Where to shoot it
The classic elevated view is from the Stanwell Tops area — Bald Hill lookout catches the bridge, coastline and hang gliders in one frame. For the curve itself, the pedestrian walkway along the bridge’s ocean side is open 24/7 and free; sunrise turns the cliff face gold. Whale season (May–November) adds spouts to your seascape.
Driving the Grand Pacific
The bridge is the centrepiece of the Grand Pacific Drive from Royal National Park to Wollongong — pair it with Bald Hill Lookout above and the sea pools of the Illawarra below. More photography spots line the coast in both directions.
