Shelly Beach hides in the corner of Cabbage Tree Bay, a ten-minute stroll along the promenade from Manly’s crowds — and a different world once your mask hits the water. The whole bay is a no-take aquatic reserve, so the fish behave like locals: metre-long blue gropers, dusky whaler pups, rays, octopus and more than 160 recorded species within a leisurely snorkel of the sand.
Snorkelling the reserve
Enter from the beach and work the rocky edges of the bay — the northern side toward Fairy Bower has the densest life. Visibility peaks on calm mornings before the afternoon nor’easter. It’s also Sydney’s favourite shore-dive and a gentle swim for kids, being one of the few west-facing (and thus usually flat) ocean beaches on the coast.
Beyond the water
The grassy reserve behind the sand has barbecues and shade, the Bower cafe does the post-snorkel coffee, and the short headland loop above the bay serves whale watching in season. Pair it with a Manly-to-Spit walk or Sydney’s other secret beaches, and browse more photography spots nearby.
