Everyone photographs Wentworth Falls from the main lookout; far fewer take the historic track network that drops below the clifftop, where the crowds thin out within ten minutes of walking. This is the Blue Mountains at its best — sandstone overhangs, hanging swamps and a three-tier, 187-metre waterfall you can hear before you see.
Why it’s special
The tracks below the falls date to the 1890s and were cut by hand into the cliff face. Take the Undercliff Track towards Den Fenella and you walk behind a curtain of ferns with the Jamison Valley spread below — a view Charles Darwin admired from near here in 1836, on the walk that now bears his name.
Getting there
Start from the Wentworth Falls Picnic Area at the end of Falls Road, ten minutes from the highway and the railway station. The full loop via the National Pass is around 3–4 hours; the quieter Undercliff section can be done in 90 minutes return.
Need to know
- Steps are steep, uneven and slippery after rain — proper shoes, not thongs.
- The National Pass section closes periodically for maintenance; check NSW National Parks alerts before you go.
- Arrive before 9am on weekends for parking and morning light on the falls.
