The Alpine Way is mainland Australia’s highest-drama road: 108km wrapping the southern flank of Kosciuszko National Park from Jindabyne over Dead Horse Gap to Khancoban, with Thredbo, wild brumby country and the upper Murray thrown in.
The route
From Jindabyne the road climbs past Thredbo to Dead Horse Gap (1,580m — often snow-dusted even in shoulder season), then falls through 40km of switchbacks and mountain ash to Tom Groggin, where the infant Murray River marks the Victorian border, before easing into Khancoban’s trout country.
Need to know
- Kosciuszko park entry fees apply; in winter, carry chains — they’re mandatory when directed.
- The Khancoban side is the quiet side: wildlife at dawn and dusk, so drive it in daylight.
- Scenic Lookout at Scammell’s Ridge is the photo stop most people miss.
